About Mt Zion Baptist Church

By the late 1800’s Blythewood’s small black population had gained the confidence of the Black community to encourage the formation and support of independent institutions to provide African Americans opportunities in addressing their spiritual and educational needs.  In addressing these needs, three (3) strong hard-working men under God’s directions, set forth as founders to establish what was then and now, Mount Zion Baptist Church. Our founders are Deacon Jacob Jackson, Deacon Archie Johnson and Deacon Harry Turner.  It has been passed on by our ancestors that Mount Zion Baptist Church was established years prior to 1872. In research of records within the South Carolina Department of Archives and History (many records of the department were destroyed by fire), records reflect 1872 as the established date of Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Having the desire to serve the educational needs of the black children in the community, Mount Zion Baptist Church opened its doors with little materials and stepped out on Faith to serve those with the opportunities of reading, writing and arithmetic.
